Start every run from the dock
Picking the robot up and pressing Clean in a random room is the single biggest cause of lost maps. The dock is the map's anchor.
Fix the dock position
Against a wall, on hard floor, 50 cm clear each side and 1.5 m in front. Mark its position with tape if it gets bumped.
Turn on map saving
Roborock, Dreame, JONR and Ecovacs all ship with map saving off on some firmware. Enable it in Map settings before the first full run.
Run a mapping pass after big changes
New rug, moved sofa, Christmas tree: run "Quick mapping" so the robot updates its reference instead of fighting it mid-clean.
Rebuild rather than merge
If rooms split or the map shows ghost walls, delete it. A clean rebuild takes 10–15 minutes on LiDAR robots and fixes what months of manual edits will not.
Camera robots need light
vSLAM robots such as the Roomba Combo j9+ cannot localise in the dark. Schedule them for daylight or leave a lamp on.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my robot vacuum keep making a new map?
It did not recognise its starting position — usually because it was started away from the dock or the dock moved. Start from the dock and enable map saving.
