Roborock's Solid-State Tech Is LiDAR, Not a Battery

Roborock's 'solid-state' upgrade is a LiDAR navigation sensor, not a battery. What the Saros 10R and Saros 20 changed, and what it means for buyers.

Quick answer: Roborock hasn’t announced a solid-state battery. Its “solid-state” upgrade is a navigation sensor: a LiDAR with no spinning parts, built into the robot’s body instead of a turret on top. That makes the robot lower, so it fits under more furniture. Roborock’s robots still run on lithium-ion batteries.

What Roborock Actually Changed

Roborock replaced the spinning LiDAR tower that has topped most of its robots with a sensor built into the body.

  • Saros 10R: introduced Roborock’s StarSight navigation. Vacuum Wars describes it as “the industry’s first dual-transmitter solid-state LiDAR combined with time-of-flight sensors.” Without the tower, the robot stands 3.14 inches tall. (Vacuum Wars)
  • Saros 20: announced at CES 2026, it uses StarSight Autonomous System 2.0, which pairs 3D time-of-flight sensors with dual-transmitter solid-state LiDAR. It’s listed at $1,599.99. (Vacuum Wars, Roborock)

Solid-State vs. Spinning LiDAR

Both sensors measure distance with laser light to map your home. The difference is how they’re built.

Spinning LiDAR Solid-state LiDAR
Where it sits Raised turret on top Built into the body
Moving parts A motor spins the sensor None
Robot height Taller Lower profile

Why it matters: a lower robot reaches under more beds, sofas and kitchen kick plates, where dust collects and older robots can’t go. Fewer moving parts also means one less component that can wear out.

Does Roborock Have a Solid-State Battery?

No. We checked Roborock’s newsroom and its CES 2026 announcements on October 6, 2026, and found no solid-state battery for robot vacuums.

Its robots use lithium-ion batteries. Roborock lists the Saros 10R at 180 minutes on low power, according to Vacuum Wars. Real runtime is shorter at higher suction or while mopping.

Solid-state batteries are still an emerging technology, with most public timelines aimed at electric vehicles. If Roborock announces one, we’ll cover it here.

What This Means If You’re Buying Now

  • Low furniture? A robot without a LiDAR turret is worth a look. Measure the gap under your lowest sofa or bed first.
  • Long runtime? Compare rated runtimes directly. No current Roborock robot uses a different battery chemistry.
  • Not sure what navigation you need? See our guide to the best robot vacuums with LiDAR, our best robot vacuums ranking, and our Roborock brand page.

Correction

This article replaces an earlier version that described a Roborock solid-state battery announcement, including a 400-minute runtime and an early-2027 launch. We couldn’t verify that announcement in Roborock’s newsroom or in news coverage, so we removed it. We regret the error.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Roborock have a solid-state battery robot vacuum?

No. As of October 6, 2026, Roborock has not announced a solid-state battery for its robot vacuums in its newsroom or in its CES 2026 announcements. Its 'solid-state' technology is a LiDAR navigation sensor. Its robots run on lithium-ion batteries.

What is solid-state LiDAR on a robot vacuum?

It's a laser distance sensor with no spinning parts, built into the robot's body. Traditional LiDAR spins inside a raised turret on top of the robot. Removing the turret makes the robot lower, so it can fit under more furniture.

Which Roborock models use solid-state LiDAR?

The Saros 10R introduced Roborock's StarSight system, which combines dual-transmitter solid-state LiDAR with time-of-flight sensors. The Saros 20, announced at CES 2026, uses StarSight Autonomous System 2.0.

How long does a Roborock Saros battery last?

Roborock lists the Saros 10R's runtime at 180 minutes on low power, according to Vacuum Wars. Runtime drops at higher suction and when mopping.
